One ordinary day in Melbourne, Australia, a homeowner returned home expecting everything to look just as she had left it.

But as she walked into the kitchen, something immediately caught her attention.

There was plaster dust scattered across her stove.

It didn’t make sense.

The stove had been perfectly clean when she left earlier that morning.

Something strange had clearly happened while she was away.

Curious and a little concerned, she began looking around the kitchen to find the source of the dust.

Her search eventually led her to the cabinet above the stove.

And what she discovered inside was the last thing she expected.
Two possums in cabinet

A Shocking Discovery

When the homeowner carefully opened the cupboard door, she froze.

Inside the dark corner of the cabinet was a small furry animal curled up tightly.

It was a wild possum.

Startled and unsure what to do, the homeowner only caught a quick glimpse — pointy ears and a tiny ball of fur tucked into the corner.

Realizing she might be dealing with a wild animal, she immediately closed the cupboard door again and called for help.

Not Just One Visitor

Wildlife rescuer Jayde Cook soon arrived to assess the situation.

But the moment he opened the cupboard, he realized something surprising.

There wasn’t just one possum inside.

There were two.

A mother possum and her baby had somehow ended up trapped inside the small kitchen cabinet.

Rescuers later believed that the mother possum had climbed into the roof to escape the heat of the day.

But when she stepped onto a fragile vent duct, it couldn’t support her weight.

She fell through — landing inside the kitchen cupboard below, where she and her baby became stuck.

A Careful Rescue

Cook had only prepared to rescue a single possum, so the situation required extra help.

Fortunately, another rescuer named Dani Fatchen was nearby and quickly arrived at the home.

Known for her calm and patient approach, Fatchen carefully handled the delicate situation.

With slow movements and gentle care, she was able to safely contain both possums and place them into carriers.

The animals were then transported for a quick health check.

Thankfully, They Were Safe

Despite the unusual ordeal, both the mother and baby possum were in good health.

Rescuers kept them in a quiet, dark place so they could cool down and recover from the stress of the day.

Possums are nocturnal animals, so releasing them during daylight could put them at risk from birds or other predators.

So the rescue team waited patiently.

And that very night, under the cover of darkness, the two possums were released safely back into the wild where they belonged.

A Reminder For Homeowners

While this story had a happy ending, wildlife rescuers say it serves as an important reminder.

Small gaps in roofs, vents, or walls can sometimes allow animals to accidentally enter homes.

And once inside, they may become trapped and frightened.

Checking for openings and securing them properly can help prevent situations like this — keeping both wildlife and homeowners safe.

Back Where They Belong

By the time the night ended, the mama possum and her baby had returned to the trees where they belong.

What began as a strange mystery involving dust on a kitchen stove ended with two wild animals safely back in their natural home.

And for one Melbourne homeowner, it was certainly a kitchen surprise she’ll never forget.
