One ordinary drive down a quiet road in Australia turned into something no one could have expected.

A driver was passing through the rural landscape when something unusual caught their eye.

At first, it looked like a large dark shape tangled in a wire fence along the roadside.

It was strange.

It was a kangaroo.

If the driver had been traveling the other way, they might have never noticed him at all.

But thankfully, they did.

Without wasting time, the driver pulled over and immediately called Possumwood Wildlife, a local rescue organization known for helping injured wildlife.

Racing Against Time

Cofounder Professor Steve Garlick quickly received the call and drove to the location as fast as possible.

When he arrived, he was shocked.

The kangaroo — later named Lake — was hanging helplessly from the fence.

It appeared he had been stuck there for quite some time.

Exhausted.

Frightened.

And possibly close to giving up.

For a wild animal already terrified and injured, rescue is never easy.

Lake struggled and panicked as Garlick approached, unsure whether the human coming toward him was there to help or harm.

But slowly and carefully, Garlick managed to calm him enough to begin freeing him from the wires.

After a tense effort, Lake was finally released from the fence.

The Road To Recovery

Lake was immediately transported to the rescue center for medical care.

Once veterinarians examined him, the full extent of his injuries became clear.

He was severely dehydrated.

His hip had been dislocated, and he had several additional injuries from the time spent hanging in the fence.

At first, his condition was uncertain.

Rescuers weren’t sure how well he would recover.

But slowly, something began to change.

As Lake grew more comfortable around the people caring for him, he started to relax.

And then something unexpected helped his healing even more.

An Unlikely Friendship

At the rescue center, Lake met another kangaroo named Tristan.

Tristan had once been trapped in a fence as well and understood the trauma Lake had experienced.

The two quickly formed a quiet bond.

Having another kangaroo nearby helped Lake feel less alone, and his confidence slowly returned.
