Tiny Chihuahua Helps Rescuers Find Owner Trapped In Glacier Crevasse

High in the icy mountains of southern Switzerland, where glaciers stretch for miles and the landscape can be both breathtaking and dangerous, an extraordinary rescue story recently unfolded.
And the hero of the story wasn’t a trained rescue dog or a seasoned mountain guide.
It was a tiny Chihuahua.:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():focal(749x345:751x347):format(webp)/chihuahua-saves-hiker-7725-843766da9f954f918eb8d7df8c6a8f67.jpg)
A Dangerous Accident On The Glacier
On July 3, a hiker set out to cross the Fee Glacier, a massive ice field located near the Swiss mountain town of Saas-Fee.
Accompanying him on the journey was his small but adventurous companion — his Chihuahua.
The pair were trekking across the frozen terrain when disaster suddenly struck.
Without warning, the hiker stepped onto what appeared to be solid snow.
But beneath the surface was a hidden danger.
The snow bridge collapsed.
In an instant, the man plunged deep into a crevasse — a narrow crack in the glacier.
He fell nearly 26 feet down into the icy fissure.
Miraculously, the Chihuahua remained safely on the surface.:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():focal(599x0:601x2):format(webp)/chihuahua-saves-hiker2-7725-33fb12d82b8844d584638b76652f7597.jpg)
Trapped Beneath The Ice
The hiker was now trapped deep inside the glacier.
The walls of the crevasse were steep and slippery, making it impossible for him to climb out on his own.
Fortunately, he had one important tool with him — a walkie-talkie.
Using the device, he managed to contact someone nearby and call for help.
But finding him would not be easy.
The glacier was enormous.
From above, the small opening where he had fallen was nearly impossible to see.
A Difficult Search
Around 3 p.m., the professional rescue team from Air Zermatt launched a search mission.
The team began scanning the wide glacier, looking for any sign of the trapped hiker.
But the task proved incredibly challenging.
The crevasse opening was narrow and nearly invisible from the surface.
Without a clear visual clue, locating the exact spot could have taken hours.
Or even longer.
That’s when something unexpected caught the rescuers’ attention.
A Small Movement On The Ice
One of the rescue specialists suddenly noticed a small movement on a rock.
When he looked closer, he realized it was the Chihuahua.
The tiny dog had stayed right where the accident happened.
Just beside the spot where the snow bridge had collapsed.
Next to the dog was the barely visible opening that led down into the crevasse.
Thanks to the Chihuahua’s presence, the rescue team was able to pinpoint the exact location of the trapped hiker.
A Loyal Companion Stays Behind
Throughout the entire rescue operation, the little dog remained nearby.
He watched the rescuers carefully as they worked.
He never wandered away.
His calm but determined presence helped guide the team to the correct place.
Without that small clue, the rescue might have taken far longer — and in extreme environments like glaciers, every minute matters.:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():focal(749x0:751x2):format(webp)/chihuahua-saves-hiker3-7725-96b695fde5cc43cfb311ed53dc4ab2bf.jpg)
A Successful Rescue
Once the team located the crevasse, rescuers quickly began the extraction process.
Using ropes and specialized equipment, they carefully lowered a rescuer into the icy crack.
The trapped hiker was finally pulled out safely.
After the dramatic rescue, both the hiker and his loyal Chihuahua were transported to a hospital in Visp for medical evaluation.
Thankfully, both were reported to be safe.
A Four-Legged Hero
After the operation, the rescue service Air Zermatt praised the small dog’s role in the mission.
They stated:
"It is fair to say that the dog's behavior contributed significantly to the successful rescue."
They added that the Chihuahua had truly acted like a four-legged hero, possibly saving his owner’s life in a life-threatening situation.
Proof That Heroes Come In All Sizes
Stories like this remind us that bravery doesn’t always come in large packages.
Sometimes the smallest companions show the greatest loyalty.
On a vast glacier surrounded by ice and danger, a tiny Chihuahua refused to leave the place where his owner needed help.
And in doing so, he helped guide rescuers to the exact spot where a life was waiting to be saved.
A little dog.
A frozen mountain.
And a moment of loyalty that made all the difference. 🐾❄️
