They Drove Across States To Rescue A Dog — Then Discovered She Was Their Other Dog’s Sister

Sheri Hogue and her husband, Dave, have always had a special place in their hearts for Labradors.
The couple from Memphis, Tennessee, knows that thousands of wonderful dogs are waiting for homes, so over the years they’ve opened their doors to fostering and adoption whenever they could.
But they never imagined that one rescue would lead to a discovery that felt almost unbelievable.
A Dog Who Reminded Them Of Someone Special
In July 2024, Sheri received a message from Kathy Martin, president of Lucky Lab Rescue and Adoption.
The message was simple but powerful.
“Kathy said, ‘She reminds me so much of your Bella,’” Sheri recalled.
Bella had been the Hogues’ beloved Labrador — a dog they adopted from Lucky Lab more than ten years earlier.
She had passed away from cancer, leaving the couple heartbroken.
“She was our soul dog,” Sheri said. “We always hoped we might find another dog like her someday.”
When Sheri looked at the photo of the dog Kathy had sent, her heart instantly melted.
Without hesitation, she and Dave agreed to foster the dog, who had been found as a stray and brought to a shelter in Kentucky.
A Dog Who Had Been Through Too Much
Volunteers helped transport the dog across state lines, and the Hogues met the rescuers to bring her home.
The moment Sheri saw the dog in person, she realized how deeply she had been affected by her past.
“She was so beaten down and emotionally wrecked,” Sheri said.
The dog looked frightened and overwhelmed — as if life had not been kind to her.
The couple named her Honey.
With patience, love, and a safe place to rest, Honey slowly began to change.
At first she was quiet and unsure.
But little by little, her personality began to shine through.
“Over time, she started to smile,” Sheri said.
Before long, the Hogues realized something they hadn’t expected.
They didn’t just want to foster Honey.
They wanted to keep her forever.
And so they adopted her.
Another Dog In Need
Months later, in April 2025, Sheri happened to see another post from Lucky Lab Rescue.
The rescue was asking for help with a yellow Labrador who had multiple medical issues and desperately needed a foster home.
The moment Sheri saw the photos, she couldn’t ignore them.
“It was around 2:30 in the morning,” she said. “I woke my husband up and told him, ‘I think I found a dog.’”
Once again, the Hogues stepped forward to help.
The dog — another stray from Kentucky — needed a safe place to recover.
The couple drove all the way to Indiana to pick her up and brought her home on Easter Sunday.
They named her Poppy.
An Instant Connection
Something remarkable happened the moment Poppy met Honey.
The two dogs bonded almost instantly.
“They connected right away,” Sheri said.
As Poppy began receiving medical treatment and slowly regained her strength, the couple noticed something unusual.
Honey and Poppy acted as if they had known each other forever.
They often slept curled together in the same bed.
Sometimes they would snuggle into a pile like puppies.
Sheri and Dave began wondering if it was possible.
Both dogs had been rescued from Kentucky.
Could they have come from the same place?
Searching For Answers
Curious about the possibility, the Hogues decided to try something they had never done before.
They ordered DNA tests for both dogs.
Maybe they would find a distant connection.
Or maybe the similarities were just coincidence.
When the test results arrived weeks later, the couple opened the email together.
What they saw left them stunned.
The Surprise Of A Lifetime
The DNA test confirmed something incredible.
Honey and Poppy were sisters.
Long-lost siblings who had somehow survived difficult pasts — and then, against all odds, found their way back to each other in the same home.
“We were blown away,” Sheri said.
The discovery made their rescue story feel even more special.
Meant To Be Together
The Hogues say they don’t believe the reunion was just luck.
To them, it feels like something meant to happen.
“It brings us so much joy to help these dogs heal and give them a safe, loving home,” Sheri said.
“But knowing they are long-lost sisters who found each other again after everything they’ve been through makes our hearts even happier.”
For Honey and Poppy, the journey from hardship to happiness ended in the best possible way.
Together.
At home.
And finally safe. 🐾💛
