When Chase first arrived at Patty Baker Humane Society Naples in November 2023, everyone believed his new life was just beginning.

The big, goofy dog had been transferred from a rural shelter where he had spent far too long being overlooked. Staff members were hopeful that once people met him, they would quickly fall in love.

And honestly, it seemed almost guaranteed.

Chase had the kind of personality that instantly brightened a room.

He was playful.
Gentle.
And always ready with an enthusiastic tail wag.

“He was a big, goofy, lovable guy who just needed someone to give him a chance,” said Becca Morris, CEO of Patty Baker Humane Society Naples.

The team believed that chance would come quickly.

But sometimes life takes unexpected turns.

When Everything Changed

About a month after Chase arrived at the rescue, something frightening happened.

He had a seizure.

For the shelter staff who had already grown attached to him, it was a worrying moment. After veterinary exams, Chase was diagnosed with a seizure disorder and placed on medication.

Thankfully, the treatment worked.

His seizures became completely controlled with medication.

But that wasn’t the only challenge Chase faced.

For a long time, he had struggled with chronic ear infections. Eventually, his right ear canal had to be surgically removed, leaving him with partial hearing loss.

Despite all of this, Chase himself seemed completely unfazed.

He still greeted everyone with excitement.

Still wagged his tail whenever someone walked by.

Still acted like the same joyful dog he had always been.

But unfortunately, potential adopters didn’t always see it that way.

A Dog Everyone Loved — Except Adopters

When visitors walked through the shelter, many stopped to meet Chase.

But once they learned about his medical history, something changed.

“They’d hear the word epilepsy and immediately feel unsure,” Morris explained.

Even though Chase’s seizures were fully controlled, the diagnosis sounded intimidating to people unfamiliar with it.

Then there were his ear surgeries.

And the hearing loss.

And the fact that Chase was a large dog — something that already makes adoption harder in communities with housing restrictions on breed or weight.

On paper, Chase seemed like a complicated dog.

But the staff knew the truth.

None of those things defined who he was.

Still, days passed.

Then weeks.

Then months.

And Chase kept waiting.

700 Days Of Hope

What could have been a lonely time became something different thanks to a program called Rescue Recess.

Through this program, volunteers take shelter dogs on outings into the community — car rides, beach trips, park visits, and adventures outside the shelter.

For Chase, these outings became the highlight of his life.

Each trip meant new smells, new people, and the chance to feel like a regular dog again.

“He absolutely loved it,” Morris said.

Those outings kept his spirit alive.

No matter how long he stayed at the shelter, Chase never seemed to lose hope.

He greeted every new person with the same goofy smile.

The same enthusiastic wagging tail.

As if today might finally be the day.

The Moment Everything Changed

After more than 700 days, something finally happened.

During one of the Rescue Recess outings, a woman met Chase.

And within moments, she knew.

He was the one.

When she learned about Chase’s seizure disorder, she didn’t hesitate.

In fact, it made perfect sense to her.

She had previously cared for a dog with epilepsy, so she understood exactly what Chase needed.

Even more incredible, she runs a clinic that treats headaches and seizure disorders in people.

Suddenly, the match felt almost destined.

All the things that had scared other adopters away were the very things she understood best.

Finally Home

Today, Chase is thriving in his new home.

After more than 700 days of waiting, he finally has what he always deserved.

A family.

A warm bed.

And someone who understands him completely.

His new mom spoils him with affection, belly rubs, and all the love he missed during his long wait.

The road to this moment wasn’t easy.

But in the end, it led Chase exactly where he was meant to be.

The Lesson Behind Chase’s Story

Chase’s story is a reminder that sometimes the qualities that make someone seem “different” are the very things that lead them to the right person.

For 700 days, he waited for someone who wouldn’t be afraid.

Someone who would see past the diagnosis and the scars.

Someone who would see the dog he truly was.

And when that person finally appeared…

everything changed.

Because sometimes, the perfect match isn’t the easiest one.

It’s simply the one who understands. 🐾💛
