Australia Moves Toward Allowing Pets in the Aircraft Cabin
Australia is taking a major step toward making air travel more comfortable for pets and their owners. Under a new proposal being discussed by aviation and animal welfare authorities, small dogs and cats may soon be allowed to travel inside the aircraft cabin with their owners instead of being placed in cargo holds.
For decades, Australian airlines have required most pets to fly in temperature-controlled cargo compartments. While generally safe, this practice has long raised concerns among pet owners about stress, separation, and potential health risks during flights.
The new plan would allow pets to sit in approved carriers under their owner’s seat, similar to policies already used in parts of Europe and North America. Officials say the change reflects growing recognition of pets as family members rather than luggage.
