For months on end, every Saturday morning, a boy around 13 years old would show up at a small toy store on the street. He wasn't there to buy anything, but to ask for work.
His job was simple: sweeping the floor, arranging boxes, and adjusting the toys on the shelves. The store owner said the boy never complained or showed any signs of fatigue.
What caught the owner's attention was that after each shift, he didn't ask for any payment. All he asked for was… a pink teddy bear.
“At first, I thought it was just a childish whim,” the store owner recounted. “But every week he asked for the same thing.”
When asked why, the boy just bowed his head and whispered, “I don’t want to explain.”
From then on, the weekly work and the “reward” of a pink teddy bear became a routine.
One day, the store owner decided to test the boy's reaction.
“The shop is out of pink teddy bears today,” he said.
Immediately, the boy froze. His hands trembled, his eyes reddened. Despite his attempts to hold back, tears silently streamed down his face.
Seeing this, the shop owner felt guilty. He hurried to the back storage room to search and finally found one last pink teddy bear.
When the boy received the item from the shop owner, he smiled. It was the first smile the shop owner had seen on him in months of acquaintance.
That evening, out of curiosity, the shop owner decided to follow the boy home.
The boy walked for nearly 40 minutes through deserted streets. Throughout the journey, he clutched the teddy bear tightly to his chest.
Finally, he stopped in front of a small, old house. Only one window cast a weak yellow light.
Through the window, the shop owner saw a little girl lying on a bed, thin and pale. The boy walked to the bed and placed the pink teddy bear next to his sister's pillow.
"This is for you," he whispered.
At that moment, the shopkeeper understood everything.
The boy wasn't working for money.
Neither was he working for himself.
He was working for his sister.
The story quickly spread through the neighborhood as a simple yet profound lesson about family love and silent sacrifice.
While many people work to earn money or pursue personal dreams, this 13-year-old boy worked simply to bring a smile to his sick younger sister's face.
Sometimes, the value of a gift isn't in its price, but in the reason people strive for it.
And for that boy, a pink teddy bear was the simplest way to express love.
