The small brown stuffed toy that comforted the baby monkey Punch has unexpectedly become one of the most talked-about plush toys on the internet. After several viral videos captured the young macaque clinging tightly to the toy, the product quickly sold out in multiple countries — with resale prices skyrocketing to more than 16 times the original retail price.

What began as a simple attempt to comfort a lonely baby monkey has now turned into a global story that blends compassion, social media virality, and an unexpected consumer frenzy.

The Baby Monkey Behind the Viral Story

Punch, also known as Panchi-kun, is a seven-month-old Japanese macaque born in July last year. Shortly after birth, Punch was abandoned by his mother. As if that wasn’t difficult enough, the young monkey also struggled to integrate with other monkeys in the troop at Ichikawa City Zoo in Japan, where he currently lives.

Concerned about the tiny monkey’s emotional well-being, zoo caretakers introduced a soft toy to help comfort him — a brown orangutan plush from IKEA.

The idea was simple: provide Punch with something soft and familiar that might help ease his stress while he adjusted to life without his mother.

No one expected that this small gesture would eventually capture the attention of millions of people around the world.

Viral Videos That Touched Millions

Videos of Punch quickly began circulating across social media, particularly on TikTok. In the clips, the tiny macaque can be seen hugging the plush toy tightly, holding it close to his chest as if it were a source of safety.

Some of the most widely shared moments show Punch:

  • Clinging to the toy after being pushed aside by a larger monkey

  • Carrying it everywhere he goes inside the enclosure

  • Protecting it from curious monkeys trying to grab it

The scenes were both heartbreaking and heartwarming. Viewers were deeply moved by the image of the small monkey holding onto the toy as though it were the one thing he could trust.

Within days, the clips accumulated millions of views, turning Punch into an unexpected social media star.

The Internet Discovers the Toy

As the videos spread, viewers quickly began identifying the stuffed toy Punch was holding.

The plush turned out to be DJUNGELSKOG, an orangutan plush toy produced by IKEA.

Once fans realized this, demand exploded.

According to Javier Quiñones, Chief Commercial Officer of Ingka Group, the company that operates IKEA stores globally, the brand quickly noticed a surge in sales.

He told Business Insider that the company had observed “a clear increase in demand for DJUNGELSKOG, especially in Japan, the United States, and South Korea.”

In several regions, the toy quickly sold out both online and in stores.

“This product has long been one of our most beloved items in many markets,” Quiñones said. “The story coming from Japan has clearly increased public interest.”

IKEA Steps In to Help Punch

The viral attention also prompted IKEA’s Japanese branch to reach out directly to the zoo.

According to an IKEA spokesperson, on February 17, the company donated several plush toys — including additional DJUNGELSKOG orangutans — to the zoo.

The donation also included storage items intended to help improve the space for children visiting the zoo.

“We hope that Punch will gradually adapt to life with the other monkeys and eventually no longer need the stuffed toy,” the spokesperson said.

Caretakers share the same hope: that as Punch grows more confident and integrates with the troop, he will rely less on the plush companion that once helped him through his loneliest moments.

Resale Prices Skyrocket

While the original toy remains inexpensive, the viral attention has created an unexpected secondary market frenzy.

In the United States, the DJUNGELSKOG plush originally sells for $19.99 both in stores and online.

But as stock disappeared from many locations, resellers began listing the toy on platforms like eBay at dramatically inflated prices.

Some listings have reached $328 — more than 16 times the original retail price.

Despite the high prices, many listings continue to attract buyers eager to own the same toy seen in Punch’s viral videos.

More Than Just a Viral Toy

Although the stuffed toy has become a trending product, the real reason people connected with the story goes much deeper.

Punch’s journey resonates because it reflects something universal — the need for comfort, belonging, and safety.

For many viewers, the tiny monkey hugging his plush toy wasn’t just a cute internet moment. It was a reminder that animals, like humans, experience loneliness and emotional attachment.

And sometimes, the smallest object — a soft toy, a familiar scent, or a comforting presence — can help make a frightening world feel just a little safer.

As Punch slowly grows stronger and begins to integrate with other monkeys at the zoo, many people around the world continue to follow his story.

Because behind the viral videos and sold-out toys lies something far more meaningful: a small monkey learning, step by step, how to heal and belong. 🐒🤍
