Anton was driving home, his mind tangled in frustration. The city was full of traffic, and as he sat there, he couldn’t help but notice the constant flow of pedestrians crossing the street. It felt like an endless parade of people without cars, and the thought of it irritated him more than it should have.

“That’s new,” Anton muttered under his breath, rolling his eyes. “Who could afford something like that?”

But then the woman took off her sunglasses, fixed her hair, and glanced in the rearview mirror. The moment their eyes met, his heart froze. There, sitting in the driver’s seat, was Lera—his ex-wife.

“Impossible,” he whispered, stunned. “But how? Why?”

The Past Comes Rushing Back

Memories flooded back instantly. Anton remembered everything from their past. The divorce. How he’d made sure Lera walked away with nothing. He even remembered how she had no driver’s license back then. And now here she was, driving a brand-new SUV, while he was stuck in his old car that barely worked.

They had a wedding, but not long after, Anton started regretting it. Lera’s friends, loud and free-spirited, didn’t fit in with the image he had in mind. He wanted a quieter life, a more “respectable” one, and his new wife was not the person he had imagined. He told her she couldn’t see those friends anymore.

But Anton wasn’t pleased. He saw Lera’s success in photography as just another distraction, an excuse for her to avoid their life together. And, to his frustration, people—especially his friends—started praising her work. He didn’t understand why.
