We brought home this silly boy yesterday, and judging by his wide-eyed wonder, I’m pretty sure it was his very first car ride. Every turn, every sound, every passing tree was a brand-new adventure for him. He’s already stolen our hearts—and a few backseat snacks too

From the moment we buckled up, he sat there like he’d just discovered an entirely new universe. His ears flicked at every engine hum, his nose pressed to the window as if the world outside might vanish if he blinked too long. When we made our first turn, he leaned dramatically with it, clearly unsure whether the ground was supposed to move like that. A truck passed us and he gasped—actually gasped—then looked at us for confirmation that this was all normal. It was equal parts hilarious and heartbreakingly sweet. Somewhere between the second stoplight and the third stolen crumb from the backseat, he decided this adventure was acceptable. His tail began a cautious wag. He tested out a small, curious sniff of the air vent. By the time we pulled into the driveway, he had already claimed the ride as part of his story. Now he explores the house with that same wide-eyed awe, as if every corner holds magic. Watching him experience “firsts” reminds us how extraordinary ordinary things can be. Yesterday he was just a dog in transit. Today, he’s home—our home—and every new sound, smell, and snack is just the beginning of a life he gets to discover with us.

Last night was his first sleep here, and I don’t think any of us slept much—not because he was restless, but because we kept checking on him. He chose a spot near the couch at first, circling three times like he was testing the floor’s reliability. Then, sometime after midnight, he padded quietly down the hallway and settled just outside our bedroom door. Not inside. Not too close. Just near enough to know we were there. That small choice said everything. This morning, he greeted us like we’d been gone for weeks, tail thumping against the wall, eyes bright with that same amazed expression from the car ride. He followed us through breakfast prep, supervised coffee making, and attempted to “help” by inspecting every cabinet we opened. It’s incredible how quickly he’s woven himself into our rhythm. Every curious head tilt, every clumsy zoom across the living room, feels like a tiny celebration. He may have thought yesterday was just a strange, noisy journey—but today, he’s beginning to understand it led somewhere permanent.
